For one you can make your own flyers and post them around youself. Business cards are free, less s/h at Vista Print. You can put them in places as well.
How about some kind of contest.

Give gym t-shirts and car window stickers to your current members. If they wear and stick them that is great advertising. Avoid giving t-shirts to members who are not in good shape. You may want to consider not printing large sizes as an excuse. I know it sounds bad, but business is business.
